If your lawn came out of this summer thinner than it went in, you have about four weeks to do something about it.

Aeration and overseeding is the one service with a hard deadline attached. In central Illinois the window runs from roughly mid-August to mid-September, and once it closes, the next real opportunity is a full year away.

Core aeration pulls thousands of small plugs of soil out of your lawn, leaving open channels a few inches deep.

That matters here because central Illinois sits on heavy clay. Clay compacts — under summer heat, under foot traffic, under mowers, under kids and dogs. Compacted soil sheds water instead of absorbing it, which is why some lawns can be watered regularly and still go brown. The water is running off, not soaking in.

Once those channels are open, three things reach the root zone that couldn’t before: water, air and fertilizer. Roots grow deeper because there’s finally somewhere to grow. And critically for what comes next, there’s bare soil exposed for seed to land in.
